The Gardens of Remembrance pay tribute to those who died on September 11, 2001, and to the thousands of survivors who fled to safety by boarding ferries departing from The Battery.
Establish 10,000 square feet of perennials in the Gardens of Remembrance, dedicated in 2003 to the survivors of September 11th and designed by Battery horticultural master planner Piet Oudolf. Replace outdated benches with a stunning granite bench that reflects the history of the site, quarried from same stone as that of the base of the Statue of Liberty. Align The Battery’s six gangways with stairways. Corroded iron fencing and parked cars were barriers to the waterfront, restricting harbor views and pedestrian access.

He’s also co-author with Mark Richardson of the book “Native Plants for New England Gardens.” Dan is Director of Applied Ecology at Norcross Wildlife Foundation in Wales, Massachusetts, and its 8,000-acre sanctuary. Alternative, more eco-focused styles of lawn care, along with some lawn alternatives is what he and I talked about on the podcast. And maybe give up a little square footage of it to some other kind of more diverse planting, too, like the wild strawberries ( Fragaria virginiana, inset). But Dan just wants to grab our attention and get us to start to make some changes at least in the way we care for the turfgrass we do want in our landscapes. THE LECTURE that he’s been giving for a number of years is not-so-subtly called “Kill Your Lawn.” Ecological horticulturist Dan Jaffe Wilder knows that starting over and creating an entire native habitat instead of a lawn isn’t for everyone.

It was the threadbare, tall old privet surrounding my childhood home, and I was determined to “rejuvenate” it, after reading about the process in a book.
